Tutorial: How to Handle a Hank

The first time that I bought a hank of yarn, it was a horrible knotted mess that took me hours to untangle. Luckily, my sister caught me in the middle of one of these messes and took pity on me. She showed me a quick and easily way to go from hank to ball, with no fancy extra equipment needed. Let’s get you crocheting ASAP! Begin with your hank and, holding both ends, gently give it a twist in the opposite direction. It will open up and you can lay it flat, as shown below.

Open up the hank into a circle, as shown below.

Take 2 chairs and place them back to back (dining room chairs work great). Place the yarn circle over the backs of the chairs moving the chairs slightly apart. You want the chairs to hold up the yarn in place. The yarn should be taut so adjust the chairs as necessary, as shown below.

Find the spot where the yarn is tied together, shown below, and clip the string.

The string will also be connected to the beginning and end of the hank. Clip the knot and hold on to one end of the yarn.

Begin winding the yarn into a ball. It will easily come off of the chairs in a circular motion, without knotting or tangling. Continue until no yarn remains on the chair.

You will be a nice workable ball of yarn! Grab your hooks and get crocheting!

   I have avoided buying hanks of yarn because they were too intimidating to me. Thank you for the lesson on how to handle it and roll it into a ball!
