Vintage Crochet Stitches
June 8th, 2015
I recently became acquainted with the very talented Hannah Cross. She is the owner/designer of HanJan Crochet. I simply adore her work and you can learn more about her today.
Can you tell us about how you got started with crochet?
My Mum taught me to crochet when I wasn’t able to walk to 6 weeks after knee surgery – I had loads of friends expecting, so I made a load of blankets and was quite literally hooked from then!
Where does your crochet design inspiration come from?
My design inspiration comes from so many places – I love to use texture, colour, nature, fashion, art and so many other things to design each piece.
What is your favorite yarn to work with and why?
My favourite yarn has to be Sublime – it is absolutely what it says on the tin! It is a cashmere and silk mix so it so luxurious and perfect for blankets and throws – my favourite things to make.
What are your greatest crochet accomplishments?
I was so lucky to grab the front page of Mollie Makes back in issue 31 with my ‘Sweet Kicks’ boot design – that was an amazing accomplishment but I’d also say now my biggest accomplishment is working with such wonderful and inspiring people – I design regularly for Simply Crochet Magazine and the fabulous Design Wars team and am so proud of that.
What are your most popular patterns?
My most popular pattern by far is my Zigzag Blanket – it went all over Pinterest and so many people seem to have made it and love it!
My little baby boots, Baby Wrap Around Crochet Button Boots, are a great hit too – people just love to make things for little ones it seems – me included!
How does crochet help you?
Crochet helps me in every way you could imagine – it lets me create, express myself, relieve my stress, unwind and meet amazing people too. I have a full on day job so being able to enjoy crochet and design so much is such a joy.
How do you balance your work and home life?
I must admit, I’m not very good at balancing work and home life…..I’m a workaholic and it’s something I need to get better at balancing!
Can you share your background with us?
Absolutely – I’m from the UK. I’m from Cambridgeshire and lived there until my husband and I moved across the country to wonderful Bath, we love it here – I work full time as a Midwife in a busy hospital here and my husband Dave works at the University here. We have a gorgeous dog called Ginny – she’s full of beans and we love her to bits!
